College Student Internships require current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student at the time of hire. Student Interns work a flexible schedule, up toa maximum of 129 hours per month, or as noted in the description below.
INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
DEPARTMENT: ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES/HUMAN RESOURCES
The Human Resources Division intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in a few areas of the department (recruitment and new hire pre-placement, classification, safety and risk management, policy and procedure) while learning and assisting with a variety of tasks and special projects.Excellent computer and communications skills, attention to detail and the ability to work in a professional, confidential environment are required for this internship. This internship will be from approximately May 1 to September 1, 2019 and the incumbent will work 10-15 hours a week.
Minimum Qualifications: Current major in Human Resources, Public Administration, Business, Communications, or related field.
DEPARTMENT: COMMUNITY SERVICES
The Community Services Department programs include Adult and Youth Sports, Aquatic Programs in our multi-pool aquatic center, Youth Services, Summer Camps, Early Childhood Enrichment, Teens, various contract classes, Gymnastics and Senior Programs. As an intern for Community Services, you will assist Recreation Supervisors and Coordinators and experience what it takes to be part of an all-encompassing Recreation Department. Working with the Recreation Managers and Management Analyst in the Administrative office you will gain familiarity with operational and administrative oversight which includes in various areas of Community Services.
The ideal intern will possess exceptional customer service skills, computer proficiency, and the ability to manage time and workload effectively. Duties include but are not limited to: assist with basic program operations, planning recreation programs and events, assist with conducting program site visits, and basic office duties.
Please note: Proof of current TB test will be required for this internship
Minimum qualifications:Current major in Park, Recreation and Leisure Studies; Recreation or Sports Management; or related field.
DEPARTMENT: HOUSING SERVICES
Duties within this internship may include, but are not limited to:Greeting and directing walk-in customers, answering phones, filing, typing written documents, assisting with reports, preparing mailing packets, and assisting with a variety of tasks and special projects. Excellent computer and communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work in a professional, confidential environment are required for this internship. The intern for the Housing Departmentwill be expected to work approximately 10-20 hours a week.
Minimum Qualifications:Current major in Liberal Studies, Social Sciences preferred, but all majors welcome. Strong computer skills (Word and Excel) and public contact experience are preferred.
DEPARTMENT: POLICE DEPARTMENT/YOUTH SERVICES SECTION
The Youth Services Section of the Police Departmentoffers many services to school aged children and their parents and is dedicated to serving youth and families. As an intern with this department, you will work directly with youth from the Vacaville REACH Youth Coalition and members of the community. The primary role is to manage social media accounts. Interns must have knowledge of social media platforms and be able to promote programs and services within the Police Department. Other activities include assisting with community events, clerical responsibilities, customer service, general errands, and other duties as assigned. The intern for this department will be expected to work approximately 10 hours a week and will require a comprehensive background check before an employment offer is given.
Minimum Qualifications: Current major inSociology, Education, or Communications.Must be available to work evenings and weekends. Spanish speaking is desirable.
DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS/ ENGINEERING SERVICES
Theinternshipduties for the Engineering Services division within Public Works may include, but are not limited to: GIS activities Asset Management work, General Engineering, Office Work, and other duties as assigned.The hours for this position will be flexible, but no more than 129/month.
Minimum qualifications: Current major in civil engineering, environmental studies, GIS, or closely related program.
DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS/ TRAFFIC ENGINEERING
The internship duties for Traffic Engineering may include, but not limited to: Handling traffic complaint investigations including preparing AutoCAD exhibits, collect traffic count data, process transportation permits, enter date for various traffic related GIS map, and other duties as assigned. This intern will be expected to work 15-20 hours per week.
Minimum qualifications: Current major in Civil Engineering.
DEPARTMENT: UTILITIES / ENGINEERING
Interns for the Engineering section of the Utilities department will perform duties as follows: perform advanced data collection, management and analysis; perform hydraulic and other technical engineering analysis and calculations; research project plans and filed for information to support project development; and organize project documents under the supervisor of an Engineer. The intern for this department will work no more than 129hours/month.
Minimum Qualifications: Current major in Civil Engineering
DEPARTMENT: UTILITIES / WATER QUALITY LABORATORY
The Laboratory interns will gain a general understanding of all aspects of laboratory operation, including aspects of the wastewater treatment plant and water treatment system for the City of Vacaville.Typical duties include:
- Entering data into Excel for tracking
- Weekly disposal of wastewater samples
- Assisting with wastewater sample collection from industrial discharges;automated as well as manual (i.e. upload) data entry into databases
- Field work using handheld devices (tablet) to record observations into a geographical information system
- Making interactive forms using Adobe Pro
- Assist with pollution prevention public education & outreach activities including but not limited to placing door hangers in target neighborhoods; distributing pamphlets at community events; public interaction
- Accompany Environmental Compliance Inspectors when responding to illicit discharges to the stormwater collection system and assist with clean-up when necessary
- Ability to drive and lift 25 pounds
- Must be able to use Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Outlook, Word)
- Inventory and organize general supplies, parts, tools.
The intern for this department will be expected to work approximately 15-20 hours a week.
Minimum qualifications: Current major in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or other closely related program.

All applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications and student eligibility. Qualified applications will be forwarded on to the applicable department for further review. The department will then contact the candidates they are interested in moving forward in the process. The selection process may include an application review, an oral interview including a practical exercise and a check of references.
Part-time positions are paid an hourly rate and can work up to a maximum of 129 hours per month*. Part-time positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits (including CalPERS membership), and do not accrue leave time with the exception ofstate mandated sick leave (24 hours per year).
Part-time positions are not covered by Social Security and are not eligible for the City of Vacaville's retirement plan through CalPERS and are therefore required to make 7.5% pre-tax contributions into a qualified plan under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 (OBRA). For the City of Vacaville, the plan is a Section 457 Deferred Compensation Plan through Nationwide Retirement Systems, Inc.
