Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association(AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Health Department
HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday;11:00 a.m.to3:00 p.m.
LOCATION: 535 E. 9th Avenue

This seasonal, part-time position will endapproximately 08/31/2019 and is scheduled to work up to20 hours per week.

Example of Duties

Tactfully and compassionately greet family members and friends of the deceased who visit the office. Assist them in locating their loved one's gravesites or Columbarium niches, select a location for future burial, place floral orders, provide memorial information or any other help they may need from the cemetery. Courteously answer the telephone and give accurate information about grave/niche location, services offered by the cemetery and hours of operations.

Schedule and confirm burial services and office appointments, take messages when the director is unavailable, assist clients with forms and documents, type and file with meticulous attention to detail. Collect and process cemetery fees and complete reports as needed. Sensitively handle difficult visitors or callers and foster an environment for healthy grieving. Assist director in researching, updating and maintaining cemetery records and maps. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and one (1)year of experience in office clerical work.

Must be able to type at a net speed of 35 words per minute (WPM).

Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver's license by the time of hire.

Preferences:

  • Experience performing tactful and professional customer service via telephone or in person.
  • Experience withmulti-line phone, printer, photocopier, fax, andcalculator.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, Outlook and Publisher.
  • Experience working at a cemetery or a mortuary.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska driver's license and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. The processing fee(s) are the responsibility of the selected applicant.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
