The Pharmacy Technician is a supportive member of the pharmacy staff in a Bureau of Prisons (BOP) federal correctional facility. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician helps to provide technical support functions in accordance with accepted policies and procedures. As directed by a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician performs clerical duties and other miscellaneous functions as needed for the day-to-day operation of the pharmacy.
Prepares extemporaneous medications. Fills each patient's cassette with appropriate medications, dosage form, and quantity. Prepares and delivers interim fill medications to the nursing station before cart exchange, and participates in quality assurance functions according to pharmacy policy and procedures. Responsible for administrating certain prescribed medications via the pill-line system as mandated by the Health Services Manual. Prepares prescription labels as appropriate. Prepares pharmaceutical medications using aseptic techniques in the laminar flow hood.
Delivers interim doses to floor. Cleans IV hood, checks refrigerator temperature, and documents each. Checks stock levels on medications and miscellaneous supplies to determine needs. Prepares and places orders to pharmaceutical drug manufacturers and storeroom according to established inventory control guidelines. Receives pharmaceuticals and supplies upon delivery and verifies them with the order.
Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.
